Here we are looking at the foot of the table with the bottom seven clubs plus top of the table Arsenal.
Other than Wolverhampton, most of the clubs here average less possession than their opponents so it’d be expected that they are spending more time defending and therefore have more opportunities to attempt defensive actions than attacking actions.
Nottingham Forest is an interesting example due to their very low Value Per Goal (VPG) number but if we look at their ATT VPM it is also very low. Their low possession stat already tells us that they’re not getting a lot of attacking action opportunities while their low ATT shows us that the successful completion of the actions they do attempt, is rather low.
Bournemouth have the lowest possession percentage in the league yet their ATT VPM is quite high compared to their near rivals. We know they don’t have attacking action volume so this means that their success rate of their attacking options is relatively good. However, their VPG is very high so while they do complete a lot of actions on offence, it isn’t resulting in goals.
Wolverhampton have the most possession and highest ATT VPM but their VPG is also very high. So like Bournemouth, Wolverhampton have trouble turning their otherwise successful attacking actions into goals.
Some of the Overall (OVRL) values are very low, such as Wolverhampton and Nottingham Forest. This is often due to team discipline. Both Wolves and Forest are high fouling teams and do pick up a lot of cards, in fact, Wolves have the most reds in the league with six.
